Il nuovo volume dei «Cassirer Studies» è dedicato alle interrelazioni della fenomenologia e dell’ermeneutica con la filosofia delle forme simboliche. Il tema di fondo ben si presta a una duplice possibilità di elaborazione e di scrittura: da un lato, infatti, gli autori percorrono una via retrospettiva che attraversa le “cosiddette” fonti, i rapporti di derivazione, ma anche le suggestioni evocative, le intersezioni terminologiche, i “Passagen”, le risonanze; dall’altro lato, seguono una via prospettivistica che, perseguendo le incidenze, le germinazioni, le residualità della filosofia delle forme simboliche nella fenomenologia e nell’ermeneutica contemporanee, conduce oltre, verso nuovi cardini e lineamenti teoretici. Le due vie, come due linee, a volte sono parallele, a volte s’intersecano, altre volte ancora si riducono a tratti di linea. A lavoro – fin qui compiuto – è possibile segnare alcuni punti fermi e – congiungendoli – tratteggiare una nuova figura della filosofia.

Nella sezione Seminar sono pubblicati gli Atti del Convegno Form und Funktion der Philosophie Ernst Cassirers, tenutosi il 7 e l’8 dicembre 2023 al Warburg-Haus di Hamburg. I contributi sono introdotti da Birgit Recki che, nel suo “discorso di benvenuto”, riprende la suggestione della sala di lettura in forma ovale del Warburg-Haus come figura e testimonianza della proficua amicizia tra Aby Warburg e Ernst Cassirer. Dopo un periodo di latenza – e, come abbiamo già visto, dopo a long Odyssey – dell’opera di Cassirer, le grandi edizioni di ECW e di ECN hanno dato il via a una intensissima ricerca sistematica e all’affermazione di Cassirer come un autore classico. Recki individua due aree tematiche particolarmente feconde: la comprensione della cultura come forma di libertà e il superamento del dualismo di natura e cultura nella relazione simbolica.

* Il volume Phenomenology and Hermeneutics era già in corso di pubblicazione quando abbiamo appreso della morte di Oswald Schwemmer. Nel prossimo volume – XX, 2027 – i «Cassirer Studies» ricorderanno la figura e l’opera di Oswald Schwemmer, che ha fatto parte della Redazione della rivista fin dal I volume (2008).  

The new volume of Cassirer Studies is devoted to the interrelations between phenomenology, hermeneutics, and the philosophy of symbolic forms. The overarching theme lends itself to a twofold mode of inquiry and exposition. On the one hand, the contributors pursue a retrospective path that traverses the so-called sources, relations of derivation, evocative affinities, terminological intersections, Passagen, and resonances. On the other hand, they follow a prospective path which, by tracing the influence, developments, and enduring residues of the philosophy of symbolic forms within contemporary phenomenology and hermeneutics, extends beyond established perspectives toward new theoretical foundations and configurations. These two paths, like two lines, are at times parallel, at times intersecting, and at other times reduced to mere segments. On the basis of the work accomplished thus far, it is now possible to identify a number of fixed points and—by connecting them—to sketch a new figure of philosophy.

The Seminar section contains the proceedings of the conference Form und Funktion der Philosophie Ernst Cassirers, held on 7–8 December 2023 at the Warburg-Haus in Hamburg. The contributions are introduced by Birgit Recki, who, in her welcoming address, evokes the oval reading room of the Warburg-Haus as both a symbol and a testimony to the fruitful friendship between Aby Warburg and Ernst Cassirer. Following a long period of latency—and, as we have already seen, after a long Odyssey—in the reception of Cassirer’s work, the major editions of the Ernst Cassirer Werke (ECW) and the Ernst Cassirer Nachgelassene Manuskripte und Texte (ECN) have inaugurated an exceptionally intensive phase of systematic research and have firmly established Cassirer as a classical author. Recki identifies two particularly fruitful areas of inquiry: the understanding of culture as a form of freedom, and the overcoming of the dualism between nature and culture through the symbolic relation.

The volume Phenomenology and Hermeneutics was already in press when we learned of the death of Oswald Schwemmer. The next volume (XX, 2027) of Cassirer Studies will commemorate the life and work of Oswald Schwemmer, who had been a member of the journal’s Editorial Board since its inaugural volume (2008).
